Definition of a Transfer Student

Each year Penn State welcomes transfer students whose experience and maturity are a valuable addition to our campus life. Any student who has attended a college or university following graduation from high school (or obtaining a GED) and who has attempted or will have attempted 18 or more semester hours of college course work at a regionally accredited college/university before enrolling at Penn State is considered a transfer applicant.

Admissions decisions for transfer students are based on:

  • Strength and quality of college record(s)
  • Cumulative College GPA*
    • Minimum GPA for University Park: 2.5
    • Minimum GPA for other campuses: 2.0
  • Submission of a completed Penn State application
  • Final high school transcript or GED transcript

* Programs and campuses have minimum GPA requirements that transfer students must meet to be eligible for admission. All attempted course work is considered in the admissions review, and as a result, a student’s GPA may be recalculated to match the GPA calculation for Penn State students.
