Creative Response by Students to "Documenting the Moment: A Visual Journal"

Fall 2021 Gallery Collective Community Project: Visual Journaling

Faculty are invited to introduce the concept of visual journaling to their students, incorporate an assignment into their class and submit the resulting work to be displayed in the Community Gallery at Penn State Lehigh Valley for the fall 2021 semester.  This project is inspired by the work of Jason Travers, artist and lecturer at Lehigh University, whose exhibit is on display in the Ronald K. De Long Gallery at Penn State Lehigh Valley.

Jason Travers   Documenting the Moment: A Visual Journal
September 7 - December 17, 2021

PROJECT Theme: Expressive Reflection of Your Personal Experience of Emerging from The Pandemic Isolation.

Visual journaling--the act of capturing one’s experiences through images--is being embraced by many, particularly during the past year of self-isolation and quarantine.  Capturing and creating imagery can be a way to not only document a place or experience, but a way to increase one’s own well-being.

Faculty are invited to incorporate this project into your classes this fall semester however it fits your discipline and syllabus.  Faculty can create an assignment that provides an opportunity for students to create an expressive reflection of their personal experiences during COVID (or perhaps the optimism of post-pandemic life).

Students will create a “visual journal” of a current personal experience. There are no restrictions on materials or media, but the image should reflect a personal response to the current pandemic environment. This could be representational (the confines of the past year, a self-portrait, etc.) or an abstract composition that focuses on a more psychological response. Mixed media, collage, writing, photography, and digital media can all be incorporated.

Student work will be displayed in the community gallery as it is submitted throughout the semester.  The display will continue to grow and change throughout these months.
