My name is Jackie Garrido. I graduated from the practical nursing program at Penn State-Lehigh Valley in December 2024. Throughout the program, I felt very supported and loved by all of my instructors. Throughout the program, I had extremely knowledgeable teachers that were personally invested in my success as a nurse. Their encouragement allowed me to believe in myself. Having faith in myself was something that I struggled with for a very long time. The supportive environment for learning was absolutely what I needed.
I consider myself extremely lucky not only having a great support system within the school, but also a very strong one at home. I guess I could say that I was the MVP surrounded by all of my cheerleaders who never stopped rooting for me.
I will never lose sight on what got me started on this nursing journey in the first place. Now, I do give myself credit for living through my sleepless nights, my countless tears, and the many times I told myself I cannot do this but still never gave up. My experience at Penn State University was absolutely inspiring and life-changing for me. I was taught well to care for a patient holistically and to see them as a person. This is so important in the medical field because the patient is not just a patient. He or she is the sunshine to someone else’s rainy day. Therefore, seeing them as a whole person will help make you feel like a whole person. I am undoubtedly a better human and nurse because of this experience.
Love always,
Jackie Garrido
