Lori Kapes
Major/Grad Year: Journalism, B.A. '08
Where are you currently living and working?
I live in Whitehall, PA and work in East Stroudsburg, PA
What is your current role and what do you love most about it?
I am an administrative assistant. I love working in higher education. What I love most is taking on new roles and wearing different hats. I'm not just doing clerical work- I'm working alongside other departments doing grant work, graphic design, budgeting, and more. Best of all, I'm helping students.
Can you share a brief overview of your career journey since graduation?
My career post-college has been a little unorthodox. I may not have landed my dream job, but each job I've had I've learned from and it led me to a life-affirming field in a role that I thrive in.
Looking Back:
What is one of your favorite memories from your time at Penn State Lehigh Valley?
Volunteering with THON. From the advisor down to my fellow students, the message and drive of THON was evident. I learned so much- from event planning, to fundraising, to understanding that the true gift of humanity is living with a purpose and giving back.
Were there any professors, courses, or experiences that had a lasting impact on you?
I was fortunate to have Michelle Kaschak twice during my time at PSU-LV and in each class she fostered open and honest discussions and was an overall great professor.
Advice & Insight:
What advice would you give to current students or recent grads?
Don't just dip your toes in, get your feet wet! Jump into any opportunity that's available to you. A niche club? Go for it! Volunteering with THON? Do it! No matter what you choose to do I can guarantee you will learn from it and it may be beneficial to you in the future.
How do you stay connected to the school or fellow alumni?
I attend various mixers and Blue & White nights throughout the year. I love that I still get the chance to reconnect with old friends and make new ones!
What's one lesson you've learned in your professional life that you think more people should know?
Seize every available opportunity. It took me an embarrassingly long time to realize it's not that hard to step up and take initiative. There's always someone who has done it before and is there to help you turn into an example for someone else.
