Healthcare is the largest employer in the region and one of the most in-demand fields in the country. With nationally-ranked hospitals and health service systems located throughout the Lehigh Valley, students have access to valuable networking and internship opportunities while pursuing their studies.

Penn State Lehigh Valley’s Biobehavioral Health (BBH) program positions students for a variety of careers that offer ample pathways for growth. Our first-rate faculty bring industry experience and strong research and professional credentials to the classroom, ensuring that students receive a well-rounded, globally recognized education that can be completed entirely at Penn State Lehigh Valley or another Penn State campus.

Biobehavioral Health Overview

The versatile BBH program integrates biological, behavioral, psychological, socio-cultural and environmental approaches to the study of the “science of health,” preparing students to work as health promotion professionals, research assistants, laboratory managers, and biomedical product and technical support representatives. Program courses include Principles of Epidemiology, Introductory Principles of Nutrition, Effective Writing: Writing in the Social Sciences, Foundations and Principles of Health Promotion, Research Strategies for Studying Biobehavioral Health, and Research and Applications in Biobehavioral Health.

The BBH major also prepares students to pursue advanced study in the natural and social science disciplines, as well as related professional areas like epidemiology, public health, environmental health and safety, and human services.

Program graduates can pursue careers in:

  • Healthcare systems
  • Non-profit organizations
  • Research institutions
  • State and federal agencies
  • Pharmaceutical companies

Student Testimonial

“My biobehavioral health degree from Penn State Lehigh Valley has proven to be very beneficial to my future career. It works as a foundation for future degrees, but even if someone does not want to pursue further degrees, a solid background in this major can provide you with the skills you need to begin a lucrative and exciting career. The major gives you an in-depth understanding of the natural world, from a biological standpoint as well as a research standpoint.”

Suggested Academic Plans

Suggested Academic Plans (SAP) provide the possible order of courses students might follow as they pursue a particular degree. SAPs are proposed schedules only. Individual student's schedules might look different if – in consultation with an academic adviser – the student has created a different plan. Care should be taken when changing the order of courses, as the SAP takes into account prerequisites and course controls. For the final work regarding the courses needed for graduation in a particular major, all students should consult the University Bulletin and their degree audit.
