Katherine Fogel, junior business major at Penn State Lehigh Valley, has just completed her internship as digital editorial intern with Bicycling, a magazine published by Rodale Inc. Thanks to Cycling Coach Mandy Marquardt, Fogel discovered a passion that would take her farther than she imagined.
Fogel, of Allentown, spent her years before Penn State playing volleyball. It wasn’t until she met Marquardt that she found interest in cycling. Fogel has been a member of the Penn State Lehigh Valley cycling club for two years and is currently club president.
“At the Student Activities Carnival in the fall of 2015, Katie came by the Cycling Club booth and showed interest in cycling. Katie had no cycling experience or equipment, but because of donated equipment and clothing, I was able to get her on a track bike at the Valley Preferred Cycling Center and on a road bike,” said Marquardt. “Katie fell in love with the sport, and in time purchased her own road and track bike. Katie's been training and racing consistently has excelled tremendously in a short amount of time”
Fogel credits her time with the Cycling Club to her academic success and internship, saying that she would not have gotten the internship without her experiences with the club.
“Through Cycling Club I met the editor of Bicycling and I mentioned that I was looking for an internship and it took off from there,” said Fogel. “I have an advantage in my internship because I have cycling experience and knowledge.”
Some of her internship duties included pitching ideas, working on articles and photos for the website, creating social media content and marketing. She would like to have a future in marketing.
Fogel said her internship has helped her as club president by giving her information for cycling resources and allowing her to become more aware of community events the club can become involved in.
Fogel’s hard work and success have paid off as Bicycling offered her a part-time position through the summer.
“Along with training, she balances school and interning full-time. Katie is driven and very committed to everything she does in her life and always give a full effort. We are lucky to have her,” said Marquardt.
The Penn State Lehigh Valley Cycling Club currently has 10 active members. They have recently added equipment, such as the Wattbike, to the fitness center to gain more club interest.
